Franka Potente survives breast cancer: “You plan your own funeral”
Actress Franka Potente revealed that she had breast cancer in an interview. She explains how she decided to deal with the illness.
The actress Franka Potente (“Lola Runs”) speaks publicly about her breast cancer. The 50-year-old describes, among other things, the feelings that accompanied this diagnosis when she was informed of it in April 2023. “Declaration of war! You have to take action. Self-pity is not one of my character traits. There is nothing dynamic about it, it is stagnation. I wanted to become really strong for cancer,” says Potente in the interview.
The mother of two daughters didn’t want to get into a carousel of thoughts in which you think too much about death, as she emphasized in the interview: “In your head you plan your own funeral.”
But she decided on the “Terminator role”. “The incentive was always: I don’t want to die. Everyone finds their own way of dealing with the illness. Lying in bed for a month and only watching series if it makes you feel better is perhaps okay.”

The illness also gave her a new appreciation for herself and those around her. “Encounters have become much more important to me,” says Potente, who has been married to her husband Derek Richardson since 2012 and has lived in Los Angeles with their two children for many years.
According to her own statement, Potente has to have regular check-ups after an operation – but she is cancer-free again.
