Burglars hit NBA superstar Luka Dončić’s mansion and stole $30,000 worth of jewelry.
Basketball superstar Luka Dončić (25) has become the latest victim in a series of burglaries among professional athletes in the USA. Last Friday between 5 and 9 p.m., unknown perpetrators broke into the Dallas Mavericks star’s villa and stole jewelry worth around $30,000.
According to the police report, the perpetrators gained access to the property through a window in the bathroom. No one was home at the time of the break-in. “Fortunately, Luka and his family were not present and are doing well,” his manager, Lara Beth Seager, told the newspaper.
Targeted attacks on sports stars
The 25-year-old Slovenian is not the only professional athlete who has fallen victim to a burglary in recent weeks. Recently, the homes of NFL stars such as Patrick Mahomes (29), Travis Kelce (35) and Joe Burrow (28) were broken into – mostly while they were at away games.
The FBI has linked some of the break-ins to “transnational South American thieves’ gangs.” The NBA responded back in November with a message to all teams asking their players to take additional safety precautions.
“This trend of targeted intrusions is troubling to all of us,” an NBA spokesman said. “The NBA Safety Department is working closely with our teams and players’ union, as well as federal and local authorities.”
Bad luck with injuries and burglary
For Dončić, the slump comes at an already difficult phase. The Mavs star has already missed nine games this season due to six different injuries. He recently suffered a calf injury and is expected to be out for at least another month.
Dallas police have begun an investigation. The property is now guarded by a private security service. However, it is still unclear whether this measure already existed before the break-in.
