Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt sign divorce papers

One of Hollywood’s longest divorce proceedings finally seems to be coming to an end: Brad Pitt (60) and Angelina Jolie (49) are said to have reached an agreement after eight years of intense legal dispute. Actress Angelina Jolie filed for divorce on September 19, 2016 due to irreconcilable differences, after two years of marriage and twelve years together. In recent years, Hollywood stars have fought over custody and their real estate. “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all possessions they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for her family ” Jolie’s attorney James Simon said in a statement to People. “This is just one part of a long process that began eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved that this one part is over.”

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were once Hollywood’s dream couple as “Brangelina”. They met in 2005 while filming the film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. They announced their engagement in April 2012 and married in 2014. They have three adopted and three biological children together. The separation, which came as a surprise to the public, was said to have been triggered by an argument on a private jet in which, according to Jolie, Pitt was said to have been violent towards the children. Four months later, the former couple issued a joint statement saying they had agreed to settle the divorce in a private forum and to keep future details of the divorce confidential by engaging a private judge.

Nevertheless, a long legal battle followed. In April 2019, a judge declared the couple single. In May 2021, a judge awarded Pitt joint custody, but the decision was overturned two months later after the judge was found to have a conflict of interest. The couple continued to battle over custody and legal issues surrounding their $164 million French estate and winery, Château Miraval.

Pitt sued Jolie in February 2022 over the sale of her share of Château Miraval, after which she filed a countersuit saying her ex was “waging a vengeful war” against her. This dispute continued in 2024. In November, Jolie scored a legal victory when a judge in the case ruled that Pitt must disclose documents.
