The Norwegian Magnus Carlsen and his girlfriend Ella Victoria Malone say yes. Carlsen recently caused quite a bit of excitement at the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships.
Norwegian chess star Magnus Carlsen has married his girlfriend Ella Victoria Malone. The two exchanged vows at a ceremony in the Holmenhollen Chapel northwest of Oslo, as reported by radio station NRK and other Norwegian media. The 34-year-old wore a suit and bow tie, his partner, who is eight years his junior, wore a white wedding dress with lace elements on the neck, arms and décolleté.
Afterwards, according to NRK, the celebration took place in the Grand Hotel in the center of Oslo, which is known, among other things, for hosting the Nobel Peace Prize winners who are chosen in Norway every year. A team from the streaming provider Netflix is said to have accompanied the couple before and during the wedding.
First joint appearance in Germany
Carlsen and Malone were photographed together for the first time during a tournament at Gut Weißenhaus in Schleswig-Holstein in February 2024. In May, Malone confirmed that the two were a couple. Since then, the Oslo-born daughter of a Norwegian and an American has accompanied the chess grandmaster to various tournaments, most recently to the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in New York.
Carlsen caused a stir there twice: first, as defending champion, he withdrew from the rapid chess tournament after a scandal over his jeans, which violated the dress code. He then shared the blitz chess title with the Russian Jan Nepomnjaschtschi when the score was 3.5 to 3.5. There were then accusations of cheating, according to which he was said to have agreed a draw before the final and away from the game board. Carlsen denied that.
