King Charles III (76) is traveling to Poland at the end of January. The British monarch will attend an event there on January 27, International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp by the Allies. .

In addition to King Charles, numerous other heads of state are expected at the event, which marks the anniversary of the liberation of the concentration and extermination camp in which 1.1 million people were killed. Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet army in January 1945.

The main commemoration ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. on January 27 in a tent above the gate to the former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp, according to the memorial’s official website. The focus of the event will be on the remaining survivors of the camp. During his trip to Poland, Charles is also scheduled to meet with Polish President Andrzej Duda, as well as members of a local community in Krakow. It is the fifth time that Charles has visited Poland.

In advance of the commemorations in Poland, King Charles is also inviting people to an event for educational institutions dedicated to raising awareness about the Holocaust at Buckingham Palace this Monday afternoon.

Among the guests is the 94-year-old Holocaust survivor Manfred Goldberg, who was born in Germany in 1930, had to do slave labor in Riga, Latvia, and was imprisoned in the Stutthof concentration camp near what is now Gdansk in Poland. After the liberation and the end of the Second World War, Goldberg emigrated to Great Britain.
