Brooke Shields opens up about her toxic marriage to Andre Agassi

In her new book, Brooke Shields talks about (forbidden) getting older, but also about her marriage to tennis star Andre Agassi. This was “controlling”.

Brooke Shields had a turbulent childhood and adolescence. The actress has spoken about this many times. Life with her alcoholic mother in particular had a huge impact on Shields and had an influence on her later relationships.

Brooke Shields recalls marriage to Andre Agassi

In her new biography “Brooke Shields Mustn’t Grow Old – Thoughts on Aging as a Woman,” the actress speaks about the pitfalls of getting older, especially for female stars. But she also talks about her private life. In 1997, the then 32-year-old married tennis star Andre Agassi. And the relationship that Shields describes in her book would probably be described as toxic today.

“My mother was a very controlling force in my life. When I married my first husband, Andre Agassi, I entered into another controlling relationship. For a while, I just did whatever he wanted,” Shields said. It’s not the first time that the actress has spoken openly about their short time together. In her 2014 book “There Was a Little Girl: The Real Story of Mother and Me” she described that Agassi was extremely jealous.

Tom Cruise advised her against antidepressants

When Shields had a guest role in the cult sitcom “Friends,” the former professional athlete is said to have freaked out on set because the actress was supposed to lick Matt LeBlanc’s finger in a scene. Shields and Agassi’s marriage only lasted two years. At the time, the athlete’s drug addiction was considered the reason for the separation. Agassi has been married to German tennis icon Steffi Graf since 2001.

But it’s not just Agassi who comes off badly in Shields’ book. The actress also remembers how her colleague Tom Cruise condemned her for taking antidepressants for her postnatal depression. He advised her to take vitamins and exercise instead. “An interesting opinion from someone who doesn’t have ovaries,” recalls the actress.
