Elba Marcovecchio spoke about the last days of Jorge Lanata: “In my heart I felt that he was leaving”

The journalist’s wife decided to share what her experience was like in the final moments.

On December 30, 2024, the journalist died Jorge Lanata. Although he had been hospitalized at the Italian Hospital for six months, the sad news caused shock among his colleagues, friends and the public who admired him.

his wife, Elba Marcovecchiowas by his side throughout that time and decided to share his experience for the first time in an interview with Angel de Brito for the program LAM of America.

In the interview, Marcovecchio described the painful process he experienced during Lanata’s last days. “It was difficult for me because I couldn’t face her, I was sad, and the basic response I had was to say ‘fine’, it didn’t work out, I couldn’t lie. It is the most normal thing to be sad,” he commented about his grief. She recounted how, in his last days, Jorge was at peace, but she felt helpless at not being able to do anything more for him. “I read to him and read to him as if I could force him even out of selfishness, and I read to him all the time. In my heart I felt like he was leaving, but a part of my heart was waiting for the miracle, and it didn’t come.”.

Marcovecchio recalled how they talked about death and other sensitive topics, especially after a previous hospitalization that was very serious for Lanata. “Jorge was very sensitive because for him it was like coming back from something serious”he mentioned. Additionally, he shared how Lanata feared for his life and how she tried to console him with small promises and moments of affection, like when she promised him croissants with ham and cheese if he behaved during a medical study.

Elba also recalled the day Lanata suffered a heart attack during a medical procedure, describing how she held him tightly and promised him rewards to cheer him up. Despite initially recovering, Lanata had subsequent complications that ultimately led to her passing. “It’s very ugly to see things because the image stays in your body. “When I saw him there I started crying.”she recalled moved.
