Music streaming is becoming increasingly popular. Listeners in Germany show clear musical preferences. And on Christmas Eve there was a streaming record.

People in Germany are streaming more and more music – and particularly enjoy contemporary, German-speaking acts. “German-speaking acts such as Ayliva, Luciano and Nina Chuba are particularly well received,” was the result of a special evaluation by GfK Entertainment in cooperation with the Federal Association of the Music Industry (BVMI).

The views on the music streaming services were evaluated. Accordingly, they continue to record significant growth in Germany. In 2024, over 236 billion streams were measured. That is eleven percent more than in 2023 (213 billion streams). “Overall, requests have more than doubled within six years,” it continued.

Country is more popular – partly because of Beyoncé

Current songs are particularly popular with music fans. Productions from the 2020s increased their streaming share from 52 to 56 percent within a year. Eight out of ten of the most streamed music acts of this decade are German-speaking.

Also interesting: By releasing new music from artists like Linkin Park or Taylor Swift, they also increased interest in their older titles. And other artists increased interest in certain genres through new releases. Views of the country genre rose by 58 percent – driven by acts like Beyoncé, as it was said. The musician released her first country album in March 2024.

Christmas Eve was the “most streamed day of all time”

“When it comes to music streaming, there is currently only one direction: ever upwards,” said Mathias Giloth, Managing Director of GfK Entertainment. “The playlists were particularly hot on Christmas Eve: thanks to 927 million views, it was the most streamed day of all time, with almost 100 million more streams than last year.”

The special evaluation is based on paid and advertising-based streams lasting 31 seconds or more for the period January to December 2024.
