“No right to maternity leave”: Franca Lehfeldt on her pregnancy

“No entitlement to maternity leave”
Franca Lehfeldt about her pregnancy

Franca Lehfeldt commented on the situation of pregnant self-employed people. She is often asked when she is going on maternity leave.

Franca Lehfeldt (35), the wife of former Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (46), is pregnant and self-employed. On January 16, Lehfeldt shared thoughts about her personal situation with her approximately 150,000 followers on her Instagram profile. The author of the book “Old Wise Men – Homage to an Endangered Species” said that she was often asked if and when she would go on maternity leave. The 35-year-old writes: “Maternity protection? Unlike employed women, self-employed women are not entitled to maternity protection and usually (if they have private health insurance) no maternity benefit either.”

She did not want her comments to be understood as a “complaint.” They merely presented “the facts.” Lehfeldt announced in October 2023 that she would be leaving her job as a political journalist at the news channel Welt. She founded a consulting agency.

According to the journalist, “there is a lot of discussion about equality, often superficially and symbolically.” In her opinion, however, there is “a real need for action. Why should a female founder or self-employed person have to use her financial reserves in this phase of life or rely on her partner, while male competitors have no losses? Isn’t that a disadvantage when it comes to balancing career and family?”

Some prominent voices also commented on Lehfeldt’s statement. Journalist Nena Brockhaus (32), Lehfeldt’s co-author of the non-fiction book “Old Wise Men – Homage to an Endangered Species”, writes simply: “Word”, which in German means: “Well said”.

Journalist Leonie von Randow, who, like Lehfeldt, was previously employed at the Welt station, reacts to the report with three clapping hands. Natascha van Dyk, the wife of the well-known DJ Paul van Dyk (53), comments: “That’s how it is. And very few people know it.”
