Actress Amy Adams believes that motherhood is glorified and the downsides are hardly talked about. With the film “Nightbitch” she wants to start a debate and encourage mothers.
Hollywood star Amy Adams (“Arrival”) has identified a distorted public image when it comes to motherhood. “I think that motherhood is completely misrepresented in public when it is glorified like that,” said the 50-year-old to the German Press Agency in London. “It just doesn’t quite reflect reality.”
With her film “Nightbitch” Adams wants to draw attention to the great challenges of being a mother. The actress says she wants to ensure that mothers are more recognized for their dedication and the sacrifices they make, instead of being plagued by possible feelings of guilt. “Maybe it will help people feel seen,” she said.
Horror comedy about motherhood on Disney+
The horror comedy by director Marielle Heller, which was shown in cinemas in the USA last year, will be released on January 24th on the Disney+ streaming service. “Nightbitch” is based on the novel of the same name by Rachel Yoder.
“I thought the book really gave a refreshing perspective,” said Adams, who is the mother of a teenage daughter. “And when I read Marielle’s script, I had the feeling that it came across as really honest and showed the true facets.”
Adams wants to take the guilt away from other mothers
In “Nightbitch,” Adams plays a woman who takes a break from her career as an artist to become a full-time mother and care for her young son. Since her husband (Scoot McNairy) travels a lot for work, she feels alone, isolated and overwhelmed. Over time, she experiences physical changes, develops new energy, and believes she transforms into a dog at night.
The actress wants to relieve other mothers of possible feelings of guilt if they are annoyed by the monotony of everyday life – or simply completely exhausted. “I think we’re all grateful when we have children, and we’re often hyper-focused on that,” Adams said. “But there’s also this other side – the exhaustion and the huge responsibility that completely changes your life. And talking about that is really important.”
