The love story of Harald and Sonja from Norway is coming to television. There is enough real drama as a template.
The forbidden love of Harald V. (87) and Sonja (87) from Norway will soon be shown on TV. Amazon Prime Video Norway. The start date is February 14th and therefore Valentine’s Day.
In fact, the then Norwegian Crown Prince had to fight for nine years for his love after he fell in love with a middle-class girl in 1959: the student Sonja Haraldsen. The two are said to have met at a dinner. For both of them it was love at first sight, as they revealed years later to the Norwegian broadcaster NRK. But Harald’s father, King Olav V (1903-1991), spoke out against the connection. He insisted that the heir to the throne must marry a woman of royal descent. Sonja, the daughter of a textile merchant, was out of the question for him.
Harald and Sonja are said to have separated several times in the following years, but always found each other again. In 1965, Harald allegedly finally gave his father a choice: either he could marry Sonja or he would remain single forever.
Happy ending after nine years
It was not until 1968 that King Olav gave in. On August 29th, the wedding bells finally rang for Harald and Sonja in Oslo. In an emotional gesture, the king led his new daughter-in-law to the altar, as Sonja’s own father had already died.
In the new series “Harald & Sonja” Gina Bernhoft Gørvell and Sindre Strand Offerdal embody the lovers. “The story has all the ingredients to delight international audiences who like unique and real love stories,” the producers said in advance.
Will the Norwegian series be as successful as other royal TV shows? The Netflix series “The Crown” already traced the life of the British Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) – with a mix of true events and fictional elements, “The Crown” caused a lot of enthusiasm, but also some controversy. The story of how the Dutch royal couple Willem-Alexander (57) and Máxima (53) got to know each other was also shown on TV in “Máxima”. A fictional TV show is also said to be planned about the former Danish Queen Margrethe II (84).
