Haute Couture
110 years of Chanel: From hat business to the most famous fashion house in the world

In 1915, Coco Chanel opened her first fashion store in Biarritz – and laid the foundation stone of her empire. A fashionable review.

She is considered the most important designer of the Paris Haute Couture: Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her first fashion business in Biarritz in 1915. At that time she already had a hat shop on Paris Rue Cambon, 21, and was considered a fashion rebel. She not only made clothes without corset, but also established light jersey fabrics, loosely hanging clothes, lush fashion jewelry and the color black. Unlike many women of her time, she didn’t let her prescribe anything. She likes to say about herself: “I’m not making fashion. I’m fashion.”

“Fashion changes, but style remains”

The Briton Charles Frederick Worth is considered the forefather of the haute couture, but no other fashion house still exists as long as Chanel. 110 years after the foundation, the customization is still in demand. The emerging mass production in the 1960s, the so-called Pret-à-porter fashion, also changed that. It was more affordable, but not unique and not made by hand.

Since the future of some craft businesses and suppliers from Chanel has been unsure in recent decades, the luxury house bought many of them. To date, around 30 “Métiers d’Art” companies belong to the company, such as the embroidery specialist Lesage or the hat makers of Maison Michel.

Like his predecessors, Matthieu Blazy will continue as the new creative director of Coco Chanel’s legacy. True to the motto of the Grand lady of the Haute Couture: “Fashion changes, but style remains.”
