Richard Gere: At the award ceremony he shoots against Donald Trump

US actor Richard Gere sees his country under the President Donald Trump, who has been in office for almost three weeks, in a dark situation. “We are in a very dark place in America,” said the 75-year-old on Saturday at the awarding of the Spanish Goya film prizes in Granada. Gere described the right -wing populist Trump as “bully” and “Halzunken”.

However, the Hollywood star emphasized that there is currently a development all over the world towards authoritarian forms of exercising power: “It is not only in the United States, it is everywhere.”

Gere was honored with an honorary game for his cinematic work and his social and political commitment. His Spanish acting colleague Antonio Banderas presented the prize. Gere and his 41-year-old Spanish wife Alejandra Silva moved to Madrid with their two sons last year.

In his speech, Gere also warned of the grown political influence of billionaires in the United States. In his home country there is a “dark marriage” between power and money like never before. The fact that the United States is now steered by “irresponsible” billionaires is “a danger for everyone on this planet”.

The Spanish Film Academy justified the award for Gere with its “extraordinary contribution to film art”. He played in “some of the most important films in the history of the cinema”. Gere became famous with “Pretty Woman” and “A man for certain hours”.

The academy also paid tribute to “intensive commitment to the autonomy of Tibet and the preservation of Tibetan culture”. The long-time Tibet activist Gere has repeatedly hit the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile, the spiritual head of the Tibetans. China had sent troops to Tibet in 1950 and still checked the Himalayan region with a hard hand.
