The Oscars will be awarded in two weeks. The German contender “The Sowing of the Holy Feigenbaums” now gets surprisingly support from a prominent side.
Jessica Chastain described the German Oscar contribution “The Sow of the Holy Feigenbaums” as “stroke of genius”. Mohammad Rasoulof’s Polittriller will go into the race for an Oscar as the best international film for Germany on March 2.
“This is a film that doesn’t attract enough attention. Everyone should see him because he is really brilliant,” said the 47-year-old at the Berlinale. Chastain, herself Oscar winner, presented her new film “Dreams” (directed by Michel Franco) at the film festival.
“The seeds of the Holy Feigenbaums” has great competition
Rasoulof’s film tells of the protests in Iran after the death of young Kurdin Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. The focus is on a family, the members of which are very different to the protests.
There are four colleagues around the trophy as the best international film – from France (“Emilia Pérez”), Brazil (“I’m Still here”), Latvia (“Flow”) and Denmark (“The girl with the needle”).
After the scandal about the film “Emilia Pérez”, the Brazilian contribution Rasoulof could be dangerous. The drama of Walter Salles (like “Emilia Pérez”) is also nominated as the best film – often an indication that the work then clears at least in the international category.
For example, in 2023 it was at the German Oscar candidate “In the West nothing new” by Edward Berger.
