BAFTA ceremony: “Conclave” as the best film
At the British Film Prices’ British Prices, “Conclave” by director Edward Berger wins some of the most important trophies – but not all. There is also a German among the BAFTA winners.
The film “Conclave” by director Edward Berger, nominated for eight Oscars, triumphed at this year’s British film prices (BAFTAS). The drama about the pope election was awarded in four categories, including the prestigious awards for the best film and the outstanding British film. Berger’s film, which had received a total of twelve nominations, also prevailed in the categories of the best adapted script and the best cut.
Four prices for “Conclave” and “The Brutalist”
Main actor Ralph Fiennes, the director Berger, born in Wolfsburg, and German composer Volker Bertelmann, however, went away empty -handed. Two weeks before the Oscar ceremony, Adrien Brody received the prize for the best leading role for “The Brutalist”. In addition, director Brady Corbet was honored for the drama about a Jewish architect who survived the Holocaust and is looking for his luck in the USA. The film also won BAFTAS for the best film music and the best camera work.
Mikey Madison (“Anora”) was happy about the prize as the best leading actress, who prevailed against strong competitors such as Demi Moore (“The Substance”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) and Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”).
Despite controversy: two BAFTAs for “Emilia Perez”
Karla Sofia Gascon, who is the first trans woman for the Oscar as the best leading actress and was also in the race for a BAFTA in this category, stayed away in London. After the year old, problematic social media comments had gotten in the headlines, the “Emilia Perez” makers from Gascon had distanced themselves.
The musical drama, which went into the race with eleven nominations, was honored as the best non-English-language film and thus prevailed against the Franco-German co-production “The Sow of Holy Feigenbaums”. In addition, Zoe Saldana won the prize as the best supporting actress, while her co-actress Selena Gomez, who was nominated for “Emilia Perez” in the same category, went away empty-handed.
The best supporting actor was Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), who was represented by director and co-star Jesse Eisenberg in London.
A German winner with a déjà vu moment
A German was also among the BAFTA winners. The two-time Oscar winner Gerd Nefzer and his team won a BAFTA trophy for the best visual special effects for “Dune: Part Two”. A déjà vu moment, because Nefzer and Co. had already received the price for “Dune: Part One”. The science fiction epic “Dune: Part Two” was also awarded for the best sound.
A total of 42 different films were nominated. The BAFTA ceremony is the most important evening for the British film industry. Numerous international stars, including Timothée Chalamet, Demi Moore, Jeff Goldblum and Pamela Anderson, showed up on the red carpet. The glamorous gala was moderated in the Royal Festival Hall on the Thames by actor David Tennant (“Doctor Who”).
