After a positive update on Sunday, disillusionment: Pope Francis has to stay in the hospital longer than expected.

Pope Francis (88) has to stay in the hospital even longer. The Vatican announced this on Monday, according to agreed media reports. “All examinations carried out so far indicate a complex clinical picture that requires a corresponding hospital stay,” says a message. According to the latest findings, it is a “polymic -like infection of the airways”.

But more than bronchitis?

The second oldest active Pope in the story was admitted to the Gemelli Clinic in Rome on Friday (February 14, 2025). We were talking about bronchitis, i.e. inflammation of the respiratory tract.

With a polymic robic infection, several different bacteria have accumulated in the lungs. This disease is much more difficult to treat than bronchitis. At first it was said that Francis had to stay in the hospital until the beginning or middle of this week. The general audience intended for Wednesday has now been canceled.

Optimistic voices from the Vatican on Sunday

The Vatican had announced on Sunday that Francis had “recovered” well. The Pope had “received the Eucharist and followed the Holy Mass on TV,” said a spokesman yesterday. On Sunday, Pope Francis had to drop the Sunday prayer on St. Peter’s Square. Only for the second time since the beginning of his term in 2013.
