For 50 years now, the NBC comedy show “Saturday Night Live” has shaped the USA with its characters and sketches. Quite every star was already there. Now there was a look back – and also self -criticism.
The legendary US comedy show “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) celebrated its 50th anniversary with a top-class gala. Numerous former stars of the show, prominent guests such as Kim Kardashian, Cher and Lady Gaga came together on Sunday evening in the Studio 8h of the NBC broadcaster in New York. There was also a swipe at President Donald Trump.
Meryl Streep gives “SNL” debut
The three and a half hour anniversary show “Snl50: The Anniversary Special” offered musical appearances by Paul McCartney, Lil Wayne as well as Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard, the song “Nothing Compares 2 U”. O’Connor once had a legendary SNL appearance. Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon sang a duet.
In many nostalgic moments, the show brought previous sketch figures back to the stage for the evening. “Saturday Night Live” made comedians like Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell to stars. Oscar winner Meryl Streep used the celebration for her “SNL” debut. Pedro Pascal, Woody Harrelson and Adam Sandler also had appearances.
Giant of American evening entertainment
“Saturday Night Live” is one of the most influential comedy programs on US television. Since 1975 she has been broadcast live from New York on Saturday evening. The show has made the show the mix of political parodies, sketches and prominent guest appearances.
The television show, which was based in Germany in the 90s “RTL Saturday night”, accompanied the recent US history.
Many of the largest episodes were those after drastic events such as September 11, 2001 or during Covid pandemic.
The fact that the shipment is actually broadcast live kept causing controversy. For example, when singer Elvis Costello stopped a song in 1977 and instead played his media -critical song “Radio Radio”. He was subsequently banished by SNL for more than ten years.
The show also looked back on Sunday. Sketches showed a compilation, which, from today’s perspective, are seen as problematic – racist, sexist or crime.
Hollywood star Tom Hanks initiated the contribution with the words: Yes, some of these sketches are “tasteless” – but the audience laughed. So if someone should be scolded, please the audience.
More or less subtle trump bashing
SNL is there for all of America – but that the makers tend to be liberal and do not have too much left for the great trace of US President Donald Trump, was also evident at the anniversary.
Comedian Steve Martin said in his opening monologue that he had found out of his appearance when he went on vacation on a boat in the “Gulf of Steve Martin” – a swipe at Trump’s announcement, the “Golf of Mexico” in the “Golf of America “renaming.
Actor Hanks appeared with a red Trump cap as a seemingly slightly knitted fan of the US President. This caused mixed reactions on the Internet and was rejected by Trump supporters.
