A lot of political prominence has gathered for Horst Köhler in the Berlin Cathedral for the funeral service for Horst Köhler. His successors also take part.
The official mourning ceremony for the late former Federal President Horst Köhler (1943-2025) started with a funeral service on Tuesday morning. In the Berlin Cathedral, numerous companions, politicians and representatives of the constitutional organs and the churches gathered. In addition to Chancellor Olaf Scholz (66), former Chancellor Angela Merkel (70) and the former Federal President Christian Wulff (65) and Joachim Gauck (85) also came.
Speakers appreciate the deceased
Wulff and Gauck took place together with their partners Bettina Wulff (51) and Daniela Schadt (65) in the first row. For the farewell of Horst Köhler, whose coffin was wrapped in a flag of Germany, the reigning Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (69) ordered an act of state. This is preceded by a funeral service, which was designed, among other things, by the former council chairman of the Evangelical Church and Berlin old bishop Wolfgang Huber.
In addition to Federal President Steinmeier, Austria’s former Federal President Heinz Fischer (86) and former Federal Finance Minister Theo Waigel (85) also spoke. Horst Köhler worked as a state secretary under Waigel in the early 1990s. Köhler also kept in contact with both men after leaving his office.
He was the ninth Federal President
The former Federal President died on February 1 at the age of 81. As the Federal Presidential Office in Berlin announced on February 1, Köhler died early Saturday morning after a short, serious illness in his family. He was the ninth Federal President of Germany from 2004 to 2010. With his surprising resignation on May 31, 2010, he ensured a bang. Köhler leaves his wife Eva Luise Köhler with whom two children got.
