The stay grew as an establishment dedicated to sheep and horticulture livestock, but the extreme conditions of the Patagonian climate presented great challenges. Throughout the twentieth century, Harberton consolidated itself as a reference center for Fuegian history. Unlike other rooms, which expanded their businesses with tourism or the exploitation of natural resources, bridges descendants maintain a preservation policy, combining family tradition with the opening to the public.
The interior of The stay remains largely as in its first dayswith furniture and period objects that reflect the daily life of the pioneers. The main house is a wood and sheet construction with a simple but functional design, adapted to the extreme climate of the region. Who was Thomas Bridges
Thomas Bridges, born in England in 1842, was adopted by Reverend George Despard and taken to the Falkland Islands from a young age. His missionary vocation led him to Tierra del Fuego, where he worked with indigenous peoples, particularly the Yaganes. Bridges came to compile a Yagán-English dictionary of more than 30,000 words, a monumental work that left an invaluable legacy. In gratitude for his work, the Argentine government granted him land in the region, and thus founded the stay, naming Harberton in honor of his wife’s hometown, Mary Ann Varder.

Today, the Harberton stay is administered by direct descendants of Thomas Bridges, who promoted their transformation into a Cultural and Scientific Center.
