Album number three: That is why Tate McRae is considered the new Britney

With “Greedy” Tate McRae 2023 lands a global tictok and chart hit – and presses the pace. On her third album she sings about her parents and with her prominent friend.

“Greedy”, “2 Hands” or “It’s Ok I’m Ok”: On the radio and on social media such as Tikkok, no way has been going past Tate McRae (21) at the latest. The Canadian pop singer, who calls many media “the new Britney Spears”, released her third album – it’s called “So Close to what”.

The musical vertical starter actually planned a career as a dancer, after all her German mother is a dance teacher: at the age of twelve, McRae attended a course at the state ballet school in Berlin for several weeks. A year later she comes to the final of the US casting show “So you think you can dance”. However, dancing is not enough for her: she presents self-written songs on her YouTube channel and is quickly discovered by record companies.

The first breakthrough is the then 16-year-old in 2020 with the Tikok viral ballad “You Broke Me First”, which Britney Spears nobs as one of her favorite songs. The US popicone is not just the big model of the Canadian. The two also have a lot in common musically: provocative texts about female self -determination, partly suggestive music videos and gripping beats. This is also shown by the viral hit “Greedy” in 2023, with which MCrae finally and worldwide draws attention.

A removal of men: Tate MCrae is confident

On “So Close to What” with a total of 15 titles, the Canadian is again working with the Lead singer of Onerepublic, Ryan Tedder, who writes and produces many of her songs. On the title track “Miss Possessive”, McRae gives itself jealous and possessive (“Take his hands from him”), in the single “It’s Ok I’m Ok” Ok “published in September, she gives men a clear absence.

“In the song I am the most confident version of myself,” explains the 21-year-old in an interview with the German Press Agency. “I don’t need a man, I come along alone. I am no longer blinded by anyone, I see everything clearly and clearly.”

The modern electric pop sound is mixed by R&B and hip-hop influences and partially reminds of the early pop sound of the 2000s. At that time, Spear’s success with songs such as “I’m a Slave 4 U”, “Toxic” or “Gimme More” had great success. No wonder that several media call MCrae as “Britney Spears of the gene Z”.

A love duet with your celebrity partner

But the Canadian can do it differently: In the guitar ballad “Nostalgia” she sings melancholy about her parents and things that she has regretted in life. “Daddy studied law and could have been an architect. Now he turns 60 and surprises what has become of the big dream,” says the final song. However, the musician admits that not all facts are right: “He is 53 and was really insulted when he heard the text.”

In the up-tempo song “I Know Love”, the Canadian sings for the first time with her boyfriend, the Australian rapper The Kid Laroi (21). He made his breakthrough in 2021 at the age of 17 and the Justin Bieber duet “Stay”.

“It is really difficult to classify my music style,” says McRae. He was particularly shaped by her as a dancer. The 21-year-old promises on her world tour, which she also leads to Germany in May and June: “You can expect a lot of energy, a lot of energy, just a complete show.” And that should also inspire the fans of Britney Spears.
