It was her first solo office act: With the help of a champagne bottle, the Dutch throne successor continued a royal tradition.
A graceful swing, a loud bang and friendly applause: Crown Princess Amalia has baptized the recent new addition of the Dutch Navy with a bottle of champagne.
“I baptize you in the name and wish you and your team a safe journey,” said the 21-year-old with a firm voice and majestic gesture on Saturday in the port of Vlissingen. Then the oldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima with an ax chopped the dew, with which the brand new, almost 180-meter-long supply ship was fixed, as the ANP news agency reported. For the crown princess, the ceremonial shipping was the first official solo office act, i.e. without being president of the parental royal couple.
Solemn names for ships of the naval forces have a long tradition in the Dutch monarchy. According to ANP, the “Den Helder” can in future supply naval ships with fuel, ammunition, water, food and spare parts and to combat drug trade and for emergency aid.
