Director Francis Ford Coppola recognizes the late Hackman as “great actor and artist” on Instagram.
Oscar winner Gene Hackman (1930-2025) and his wife Betsy Arakawa (1961-2025) were found dead on Wednesday in their home in New Mexico. The cause of death is not yet known. Director Francis Ford Coppola (85) recognized the actor with whom he once worked on social media.
“The loss of a great artist is always a reason for mourning and celebrating at the same time,” he writes in his Instagram post. Gene Hackman was a great actor, “inspiring and great in his work and complexity. I look at his loss and celebrate his existence and his contribution.” To this end, Francis Ford Coppola published a picture that shows the two on the set of a joint film.
Gene Hackman took over the leading role in Coppolas Thriller “The Dialogue” (in the original: “The Conversation”). The film around the mourning specialist Harry Caul from 1974 received three Oscar nominations.
Other stars also say goodbye
More stars from the film world already paid tribute to Gene Hackman for his work. Actor George Takei (87) called the colleagues “true giants of the canvas”. Hackman was able to play everyone, “And you could feel a whole life behind it, an outstanding presence or a normal person. He was as strong as an actor. We will miss him, but his work will live on.” “Baby Driver” director Edgar Wright (50) wrote to a photo of Hackman: “The biggest”.
