Again, Swatch releases a new version of the popular Moonswatch. This time the brand wants to celebrate a special watch that wrote history 60 years ago.
With the Moonswatch, the Swiss brand Swatch has succeeded in a coup: Since the start of the product series, the clock from the so -called Bioceramic, a mix of ceramics and bioplastics, has been one of the most successful long -range burners. It is therefore not surprising that the manufacturer keeps refusing. With the Moonswatch in 1965, Swatch is now expanding the palette with a homage to the origin of the model.
Swatch puts a monument to itself
The number in 1965 has several reasons for the clock: For example, it alludes to the success that makes the Omega Speedmaster a very popular model to this day. In 1965 the manufacturer, who is now part of the Swatch Group, managed to win a prestigious competition.
Exactly 60 years ago, the American space agency NASA opted for the Speedmaster as an official timepiece for their astronauts under three sentences. She received the flight qualification for all manned space missions and space activities – hence the name Moonwatch as a nickname for the original.
The clock now presented may not be enough for a trip to the moon, but it is a comparatively inexpensive homage. This is not only noticeable by the clear and the design based on the original, but also by the displays on the dial. Auxiliary number leaves, so-called totalists, which differ quite significantly from the usual chronograph design.
Complicated complication
The original has a small second, a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour counter. Quite different with the new edition. Based on the year, one totalizer shows 19 hours, the other 65 minutes. They make the time more complicated, or as Swatch puts it: This means that “the chronograph can be read a little differently”. Only the small second has remained. The new ads always read both the year 1965 and the 60 – i.e. the anniversary.
Moonswatch and Blancpain Scuba: How the popular hype watches are created at Swatch

With ceramic powder and bio -based plastic, which is obtained from castor oil, it is not enough if you want to make Bioceramic for a swatch. Depending on the model, you need different pigments so that the actually white base material takes on the desired color. This in turn means for further production: Each machine must be adjusted if a different color is poured, since the material needs different settings depending on the mixture.
