Leony says why her parents became the inspiration for the album title “Oldschool Love” and what is important to her in a relationship.
The German singer Leony (27) released her new album “Oldschool Love” on February 28 after her debut album (“Somewhere in Between”, 2023), and from March 10th she will be on a big tour of Germany with her new work. In an interview with the news agency Spot on News, the musician talks about her parents as inspiration and role model and reveals which values are important to her in a relationship. In addition, the singer tells about her international successes and her “absolute dream feature”.
It is her second album. How would you describe your way from your debut album to your second work? How have you changed personally?
Leony: I have experienced an incredible amount since the first album was released, which of course inevitably changes – both personally, but also musical – I think I have become more mature. While we tried a lot on the first album and left everything to chance, we now knew a lot better at “Oldschool Love”, which works well, but also what is also fun on stage, for example. This time there is even a real concept for the album and there was even more love from me and my team in the album, the songs and in the stories. There are a lot of personal stories in there and I am very, very proud of it.
The relationship of her parents was the inspiration to “Oldschool Love”. They combine respect, love and mutual support with their relationship. How did your parents react to the song?
Leony: You were very proud that I dedicated the title of the album to you and also wrote the song, “Oldschool Love”. My parents are a very important part in my life. In principle, they support me with everything I do. Always on the first day. To grow up and see what my parents’ relationship is was very important to me and that’s why I am very happy that my parents like to hear the song so much.
To what extent are your parents a role model for their own lives?
Leony: My parents are giant models for me and a lot of values that they live after, I also took over for myself. My parents are very polite to everyone, give a lot of love, just like to do a lot for other people. My parents stand for cohesion – if there are problems, you work on it and do not give up immediately or throw everything down. The kind of relationship that my parents have, but also how they are with other people is a very great role model for me.
Nostalgia swings with the term “old school”. Do you have the feeling that values like loyalty are no longer valued in relationships?
Leony: It depends on the relationship, of course you cannot shear all relationships about a comb, but I already believe that today we basically live in a throw -away company than maybe 20, 30 years ago. And that most people think that what you have is not yet good enough and there is something better at the next corner, but because you are also influenced a lot by the media. Today we come into contact with each other very differently and with a wide variety of things. I think it’s a shame that this lost so much values and find it just very nice as it was back then.
What else is important to you in a relationship?
Leony: Honesty is very important to me in a relationship. Loyalty, so – if I choose a monogamous relationship and committee, then right. Regardless of whether there are other options out there and let’s say “temptations” – you don’t have to give it in.
They say that “broken hearts and bitter disappointments” have so far played no role in their lives and therefore do not write about it. Why would that feel wrong?
Leony: Of course there are also songs from me who act on heartache, but then it is more of a friend of a friend or from the perspective of a third person. It would not feel quite authentic for me to write about how bad I was because someone broke my heart or I have had other dramatic experiences if that was never the case. I am a very, very happy person and – thank God – not yet in many situations where I was really bad.
“By your side” is a song for her best friends you have known for 18 years. How has your friendship changed through her success? How do you try to maintain friendship?
Leony: If you are traveling so much or don’t live in the same place, it is of course a challenge to maintain a friendship. But I have to say that the friendship has only become narrower due to success. It is not an issue for my friends that I am now a well -known singer – for her I am still the same person as 10, 15 years ago. The person who gave their friends at school with their friends. And now it’s my job to go on stage, as it is a job to be a hunter, forester, architect or media designer. For me it is nice to know that I have a base – people who went through thick and thin with me, know me inside and by heart – that is my resting pole. We are in contact every day, try to spend several times a year together.
“Your way” is about her late grandfather. At what moments do you miss him the most? How do you keep him in honor?
Leony: I always miss my grandpa … and often wish that he would still experience a lot. No matter whether from my siblings, my parents or from myself – what I do or when I play a concert. I think it’s a shame that he can’t see what has become of me or what will come in the future if I might have children. But my grandpa is always in my head with me, in my heart – he shaped me very much in my childhood and in my youth and also many values that I represent today, I got my grandfather.
From March you will also be on tour. What do you do to ensure that you don’t miss your home/loved one too much in time?
Leony: The good thing is that a lot of my friends and my family are part of many shows, visit me and look at the concerts. Apart from that, it is to be on tour, a special time in which I am very at the moment with my focus. There are so many things happen, I have to have so much in my head at the same time that I don’t have so much time to miss someone or wish myself to be at home.
Your EM song is also on the album. How did you experience the time with Ryan Tedder and ONEREPUBLIC? Are you still in contact today and would you work together again?
Leony: The time around the European Championship and the European Championship song was a very exciting time for me. Working together with artists such as Ryan Tedder, ONEREPUBLIC, or MEDUSA, performing at the European Championship final – that was very formative and inspiring. At the same time, it was also very exciting to have so much media presence. I don’t want to miss the time. We are still in contact from time to time – for example on Instagram – and yes, I would definitely work with Ryan Tedder again and of course also with anerepublic.
They also had success abroad with “I Can Feel”. How do you experience the international reactions to your music? Are you striving for an international career?
Leony: Through streaming platforms such as Spotify and Tiktok, nowadays as a German artist, you have the opportunity to be internationally successful if you make English music. I was already lucky and privilege that my music was well received outside of Germany – “I Can Feel”, for example, was the most played song in France on Radio Energy. I have already played live abroad and it is always very interesting to see how different the audience is, how different it reacts to the songs and a different mood arises. I am very excited to see where this exciting journey will lead me and I am definitely striving to have even more international success.
You are happy to work with other artists. What would be your greatest desire for desire?
Leony: I am basically open to collaboration of all kinds, but my absolute dream feature would be coldplay. This is my favorite band, I love the music, I love their live appearances and the music triggers a lot of emotions in me. So, I would really like to work with Coldplay.
