Oscars 2025: Does Hollywood cuddle in front of Trump?

In view of Trump’s current confrontation course, the Oscar ceremony went on stage with striking political restraint.
Hollywood would have had the chance to attack and annoy US President Donald Trump head-on. After all, Sebastian Stan was nominated at the Oscars for his greasy Trump creation in the Biopic “The Apprentice-The Trump Story”. But the industry, which had spoken out in the past election campaign, almost closed against the Republican and for the Democrats, was little brushed on riot at the Oscar Awards.
Moderations and speeches remained more general when they started political. The Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham, one of the directors of the Oscar -winning documentary “No Other Land”, who was the Middle East policy of the United States, was the most clear.
However, unlike in earlier award, nobody spoke out the name of the president. Anyone looking for Trump-comments at the Oscars found them in the excellent movies.
Socially critical films instead of political speeches
The US film academy relied on works with a clear socially critical attitude in the important categories. In addition to the five-time winner “Anora”, it was about “the brutalist”. Both question America of the big differences between poor and rich.
Both in “Anora” and in “The Brutalist” it is about people with a migration background who fail because of the American dream. The sympathy of the filmmakers is clearly with the oppressed, never with the rich.
“Anora”, the biggest winner of the evening with five Oscars, is about sex workers Ani (Mikey Madison), who gets to know a Russian oligarch son named Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn) in New York. The two marry after a short time – to the annoyance of Vanya’s family, who then stands up to Ani.
The monumental drama “The Brutalist”, which was considered three prizes, tells of a Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor named László Tóth (Adrien Brody), who wants to start a new life in the USA and get into the dependency of a super-rich family.
Director Brady Corbet told the magazine “Variety” that he wrote “the brutalist” during Trump’s first term. In doing so, he had in mind that the goal of right -wing politics was often to turn back into the 1950s. But the 50s were “very, very difficult years”.
Moderator O’Brien makes Putin attachment and complains Sandler’s outfit
The two -award -winning musical film “Wicked” – the imaginative and pop “magician of OZ” history with Cynthia Erivo and pop singer Ariana Grande – can also be interpreted as a criticism of fascist systems.
It did not remain completely apolitical during the Gala, several hours. However, one often had to raise a certain interpretation performance to hear the political swipes against the Trump government.
Moderator Conan O’Brien received approval for a pithy sentence on the resistance against a “powerful Russian”, which was to be understood as a swipe at Trump and his attitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been war on Ukraine for three years. When he spoke about the first awards for “Anora”, he said: “I think Americans are enthusiastic that someone will finally offer a powerful Russian.”
Prize winner Brody also became political at the end of his long acceptance speech and said in alluding to his second award in a film role as a suppressed Jew: “Once again, I am here to disclose the persistent trauma and effects of war and systematic oppression, of anti -Semitism, racism and external determination.”
He prayed “for a healthier, happier and more inclusive world. And I think if the past can teach us something, then it is the reminder not to leave hatred uncontrolled.”
Alluding to Selenskyj?
In addition, O’Brien jokingly complained about the actor Adam Sandler for his outfit – he was sitting in the audience with shorts and casual sweatshirt jacket. For such a night it is important to dress well. Sandler asked: “What are you going?”.
Perhaps this alluded to the unprecedented scandal between Trump and the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in the White House a few days ago. There Selenskyj – who usually wears sweaters – was asked why he was not wearing any suit. But whether O’Brien actually referred to it was not entirely clear.
Perhaps, the “Hollywood Reporter” recently specified with regard to the striking silence of the industry in the face of Trump, America’s film industry has decidedly stayed still because the loud support for Kamala Harris did not bring the desired result in the end.
The industry may also be afraid of an increasing influence of certain multimilliardaries on the film industry. After all, the gala alluded to the takeover of the James Bond series by the Tech Group Amazon. In his moderation, O’Brien joked that an Amazon manager would be a new 007.
