Bernhard Vogel is dead. The former Prime Minister of Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate died at the age of 92.
Bernhard Vogel, veteran of the CDU, died dead. Vogel died at the age of 92, as “Bild” reports on Monday morning.
Vogel was the only German politician to be a state chief of two federal states. From 1976 to 1988 he exerted the office of Prime Minister in Rhineland-Palatinate, and after the fall of 1992 to 2003 he was in the same position in Thuringia.
CDU member since 1960
The CDU legend, born in Göttingen in 1932, was the younger brother of former SPD chairman Hans-Jochen Vogel, who died in 2020 at the age of 94. Vogel has been a CDU member since 1960. Vogel at the age of 34 received the post of the Minister of Culture in Rhineland-Palatinate thanks to Helmut Kohl (1930-2017), who was then chairman of the Landes-CDU parliamentary group.
Even after his active politician career, Vogel always stayed politically interested and strong. According to “Bild”, he took part in the federal party days of the CDU until old age.
Vogel had only published his memoirs last year under the title “First the country: my life as a politician in West and East”.
Vogel had never married. He was so early in important political offices that there was simply no time for family,
