Film prices: tragicomedy “Anora” fetches most of the Oscars

At the Oscars, the tragicomedy “Anora” has won five awards about a sex worker in the USA, including for the best film. The work of director Sean Baker had been nominated six times. The special effects artist Gerd Nefzer is successful from the German filmmakers – he won his third Oscar for “Dune: Part Two”.

Baker set a record: he is the first award winner to personally award four Oscars for the same film. His film “Anora” tells of a stripper who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch. The film is a mixture of romance, gangster comedy and social drama and had also won in Cannes. Mikey Madison won the Oscar as the best leading actress and surprisingly prevailed against favorite Demi Moore (“The Substance”).

Three Oscars went to the drama “The Brutalist” about a Jewish architect who wants to build a new life in the USA after the Holocaust. Leading actor Adrien Brody won his second Oscar for the role – Timothée Chalamet, who played musician Bob Dylan in “Like a Complete Unknown”, went empty.

Brody received the first Oscar in 2003 for his role in the Holocaust drama “The Pianist”. At the end of his long acceptance speech, he became political this time and said: “Once again, I am here to disclose the persistent trauma and effects of war and systematic oppression, of anti -Semitism, racism and external determination.”

He prayed “for a healthier, happier and more inclusive world. And I think if the past can teach us something, then it is the reminder not to leave hatred uncontrolled.”

Otherwise, the speakers kept back on stage in terms of political comments. Moderator Conan O’Brien, who moderated for the first time, allowed himself a pithy sentence on the resistance against a “powerful Russian”. According to the first awards for “Anora”, he spoke that the film had a run. The protagonist, who falls in love with the Oligarchsohn, also offers his family. “I think Americans are thrilled that someone finally offers a powerful Russian’s forehead,” said O’Brien.

The 97th Oscars were awarded in Hollywood. The show was opened with a tribute to the city of Los Angeles, in which fires had caused a devastating damage at the beginning of the year.

The Oscar for the best supporting actor went to Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”). The best supporting actress was Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”), who reminded on stage in tears that she was a child of immigrants.

In his opening speech, O’Brien said, among other things, against actress Karla Sofía Gascón. The main actress of the film “Emilia Pérez” had expressed itself in old, now deleted posts on the portal X Islam -hostile and racist. The musical thriller went into the race with 13 nominations and ultimately only won in two categories.

In addition to Nefzer, other filmmakers from Germany were nominated, but they went away empty -handed. Costume designer Lisy Christl and composer Volker Bertelmann, who were nominated for the Vatican thriller “Conclave”, did not prevail. The film by director Edward Berger, however, won an award for the best adapted script.

For Germany, the drama “The Sowing of the Holy Feigenbaums” of the Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, who lives in Hamburg – was nominated – the price in the International Feature Film division went to the drama “Forever here” (“I’m Still”) about the military dictatorship in Brazil.

The German production “September 5” about the 1972 Olympic attack in Munich, which was nominated for the best original script, also missed the award.

Oscar winner Brody also caused a discussion value far from his profit. On the red carpet, Hollywood star Halle Berry spoiled in a surprising way more than 20 years after a stormy kiss from him and kissed him on his mouth.

When Brody later went to the stage for his acceptance speech, he suddenly remembered that he was still chewing a chewing gum. He quickly threw him on his partner Georgina Chapman – she tried to catch him.

During the award ceremony, several firefighters came onto the stage, which were honored as heroes after the forest fires of O’Brien. Hollywood star Morgan Freeman recalled actor Gene Hackman, who had been found dead in his property with his wife Betsy.

An Oscar went to the documentary “No Other Land” of a Palestinian-Israeli team that tells of the evacuation of Palestinian villages in the West Bank. The film was also awarded at the Berlinale 2024. At that time, the filmmakers were accused of one-sided positioning in the Middle East conflict and sometimes also anti-Semitism.

The directors used the stage in Los Angeles to point out the situation in their region. “” No other Land “reflects the hard reality that we have endured for decades and against which we still defend ourselves,” said the Palestinian filmmaker Basel Adra, “while we call up the world to take seriously to end injustice and to stop the ethnic cleaning of the Palestinian people.”

Actress Daryl Hannah recalled the Ukraine on stage, which has been defending itself against a war of attack in Russia for three years. Most recently there had been an unprecedented scandal between US President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in the White House.
