Whoopi Goldberg: Oscar-comeback with daughter after 34 years

Whoopi Goldberg (69) and her daughter Alexandrea Martin Dean (51) experienced a déjà vu moment at the Oscars 2025. Because 34 years ago they ran together over the red carpet of the award ceremony.

Goldberg shone on March 2 in the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles in an opulent, futuristic blue evening dress by Christian Siriano, while her daughter wore a skin-tight black dress. It was the first time since 1991 that the two stepped across the red Oscar carpet and posed for the photographers. At that time, Whoopi Goldberg was awarded the prize as the best supporting actress for her role as a clairvoyant in the supernatural drama “Ghost – Message from Sam”.

Goldberg also met her former “Ghost” colleague Demi Moore (62) on the red carpet. However, it became the unlucky of the evening. Because the jury did not give her the long-awaited first Oscar of her career, but “Anora” newcomer Mikey Madison (25) was named the best leading actress.

So far, Whoopi Goldberg has only been able to triumph once at the Oscars, but is closely connected to the Academy Awards: she has already moderated the award ceremony four times.

The biggest win is probably her daughter anyway. “I am proud to be able to call her my best friend,” enthused Goldberg when she introduced Alex 2016 as a guest in her talk show “The View”. “She is one of the most trustworthy and loyal people I know.” At the time, Goldberg also revealed some things that her child likes best. “She is someone who makes me laugh.” And they could “talk to each other at any time of the day and night”. Goldberg emphasized: “I just like her very much.”

Alexandrea Dean comes from Goldberg’s first marriage to Alvin Martin. The actress was only 18 years old at birth. The marriage to Martin held from 1973 to 1979. After that, Goldberg was married twice. Her daughter is also an actress and was seen at her side in “Sister Act 2 – in Divine Mission” (1993).
