After two episodes of acute shortness of breath, Pope Francis was able to sleep through the hospital, but his condition remains complex.
Pope Francis (88) spent a quiet night in the Roman Gemelli Clinic after the threatening shortness of breath on Monday. “The Pope slept all night and is now resting,” said the Vatican on Tuesday, as reported, among other things, “Vatican News”.
On the evening before, two episodes of acute breath shortness of breath were reported. According to Vatican, these were “caused by a significant accumulation of mucus in the bronchi and the resulting bronchospasms”. In both cases, medically, the mucus had to be sucked off to free the airways of the Pontifex.
Complex state of health with disease history
“The two crises were triggered by the reaction of the bronchi that tried to discharge the mucus to remove bacteria,” said the doctors in a message. A little ray of hope: Despite these complications, the Pope’s blood values remained stable and showed no signs of a new infection.
Francis is still supported with non-invasive mechanical ventilation. The forecast of the treating doctors remains reserved, his general state of health is officially described as “complex”. Nevertheless, the Vatican emphasized that the Catholic head of the church had remained awake and responsive throughout the entire time.
The Pope was admitted to the Gemelli Clinic on February 14 because of bronchitis. From this disease, pneumonia developed on both sides. Although his condition had gradually improved “slightly” in the past week, Francis suffered a severe respiratory crisis on Friday, as a result of which he had to receive oxygen.
Pre -loaded lungs made it difficult to recover
The doctors are particularly worried that Francis had to be removed part of his lungs at a young age, which makes the current treatment more difficult. The Pontifex has been healthy for a long time and has had to be treated medically in recent years.
Despite his health problems, the Pope has always been combative in the past and tried to meet his obligations. However, the current disease has led to numerous appointments, including important international appearances.
Believers around the world pursue the state of health of the Catholic Church head with great sympathy. The Vatican has announced further medical updates for the coming days.
