Summer cruise planned in August

King Frederik and his wife Mary will be back with the Dannebrog in 2025. The first dates have been determined.

King Frederik X. (56) and Queen Mary (53) continue a tradition of the Danish royal family in 2025: You will again take a summer cruise through Denmark’s waters on the historic yacht Dannebrog. The dates for this were now.

The season will open on May 7th

The summer trip on the Dannebrog is a tradition of the royal family on Christian IX. (1818-1906) in the late 19th century. The royal couple wants to go on board the ship on May 7 and officially open the 2025 season.

After this event, Frederik and Mary will start their first big sailing tour of the year on August 25th. It should last until August 28, as the palace announced. The cruise begins in the municipality of Frederikshavn on the island of Jutland before going to the Thisted municipality on August 26th and on August 27th to the island of Læsø. The tour should then end on the island of Samsø.

In May 2024, King Frederik and Queen Mary climbed the Dannebrog ship for the first time since the change of throne. Visits to Sweden and Norway were also part of the summer sailing tour. It was also the first state visits of the royal couple that serve to strengthen diplomatic and cultural relationships. In June and July the king and the queen visited the Dannebrog Greenland, which belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. In August they went on a cruise through the southern areas of the country and stopped in Bornholm, Ærø, Assens and Vejle.

Officers are also trained on the Dannebrog

The royal ship was built in 1931/1932 in the naval yard in Copenhagen as a replacement for the previous royal ship, the bike steamer Dannebrog from 1879. Especially during the sailing season, the ship is often used for official events and parties. In 2017, for example, Queen Margrethe II (84) was the host of the 18th birthday party of her oldest grandson, Count Nikolai.

The ship is usually located in Holmen in the Copenhagen port, so that Royal fans can visit it if it is not used by the royal family. The berth is just a short walk from the palaces of Amalienborg, where the king and the queen live. During its trips, the Dannebrog also takes on tasks such as sea monitoring, sea rescue and training future officers.
