In an interview, actress Janin Ullmann talks about his own strengths and doubts – and about the long way to take care of women.

Janin Ullmann (43) and documentaries – a rather unusual combination. The actress and moderator has made an exception for the documentary short film “The Final Copy of Ilon Specht”. In Hamburg, the 43-year-old presented the strip of the two-time Oscar winner and director Ben Proudfoot (34), who looks back on the life of the advertising texter Ilon Specht. Specht was invented in 1973 the legendary advertising slogan “Because i’m Worth it”-the L’Oréal Paris still used today and that stands on behalf of the feminism engagement of the beauty brand.

In an interview, Ullmann reveals where she sees her own strengths, when she doubted her and who is her greatest role models.

Ilon Specht shaped the legendary advertising slogan “because I am worth it”, which later became worth “because you are worth it”. In your opinion, what makes this sentence so timeless and effective?

Janin Ullmann: For me this is a power set. Even today, more than 50 years later, Ilon Specht’s legacy is still up to date and alive – as a core message of L’Oréal Paris and as a symbol of female strength and independence. Understanding and recognizing your own value also means for me to stand up for yourself, set limits and thereby respectfully deal with yourself and others. We all ask ourselves from time to time whether we are good enough – and this sentence gives a simple but powerful answer: Yes, that’s what we are!

You are a brand ambassador of L’Oréal Paris. What emotions does the sentence trigger with you today when you say it?

Ullmann: I wear the same way as many people, self -doubt in me and there were moments in my life in which I have allowed others to determine above my value. I wouldn’t do that anymore today. It was a learning process through which I went. That’s why I want to remind others and myself again and again that we are valuable. This sentence gives me inner peace and strength.

They actively campaign for female empowerment. What are the characteristics of a strong woman in your opinion?

Ullmann: I love to see women who are confident, know their value and are financially independent on their own feet. I also consider empathy and personal responsibility to be great strengths.

What would you call your greatest strength?

Ullmann: My greatest strength is my determination. I am not afraid of new beginnings – on the contrary, I often draw a lot of strength from it.

Which women did you inspire and encourage you on your way – do you have role models?

Ullmann: First and foremost, the women in my family always inspired me. My single mother who raised my sister and me. My grandmother, who had an incredible humor. And also women like Jane Goodall, whose big fan I am. In the 1960s she traveled to Gombe alone at the beginning of 20 to explore the behavior of chimpanzees; Today she is a activist. Your path inspires me a lot.

What message would you like to give young women and girls on the way when it comes to self -esteem and self -confidence?

Ullmann: Attitude to yourself, get to know yourself and your needs, stand for you and let no value deny your value. Tell you every day that you are worth it and surround yourself with people who encourage you in it.

What else has to change in our society so that women worldwide are supported more in their self -esteem?

Ullmann: The most important point is equal treatment. If women get the same salary for the same work as men when they sit at crucial tables and have a say, be it in politics, companies, or other areas, then we are on the right track. Until then, we still have a long distance ahead of us. That is why we should go this path together as an ally.
