Athena, the daughter of Princess Beatrice (36), was born too early on January 22nd. “Nothing prepares you for the moment when you notice that the baby will come too early,” writes Beatrice in her essay. “You have so little control. Will there be a healthy born? How will you bring the rest of the family life under one roof while trying to keep a tiny person safe and healthy?” The wife of Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi (41), with whom she has been married since 2020, also writes: “This uncertainty leaves an overwhelming fear of the stranger.”

She learned “so much” from this second pregnancy. “After the routine examinations, we realized that our treasure had to be monitored exactly, and we had to prepare for an early arrival. […] I have learned so much more about our remarkable human body, but above all about what we don’t know. “

Thanks to the constantly developing technology, doctors, midwives and nurses could make more progress in understanding the unique complications in premature birth every day. As a technology optimist and with the experience of her own pregnancy trip, she wants to work to find answers to women around the world. Princess Beatrice also explains: “Poor birth concerns so many families and present them with the same challenges as me. The 36-year-old adds: “I have an unusual life behind me, but my joys and fears during pregnancy and motherhood are the same as those of millions of other women all over the world. How countless other mothers were awake in the weeks before the birth, tried to observe every movement of the baby in my stomach and asked me a thousand times: ‘What if this or that happens?'”

Athena finally born healthy a few weeks before the actual birth date and today she is doing well. “She was so tiny that it took more than a few weeks before the tears of relief dried and life with our healthy baby felt real. Her feet were as small – almost as big as the paws of one of my older daughter’s cuddly bunnies.”

In the end, she concludes her contribution: “Perhaps it is because I have become a little older and hopefully a little wiser – or maybe my mother’s breast and skin cancer diagnosis has to do last year – but for me there is nothing more important than promoting the necessary research on the health challenges with which women are confronted every day.” She hoped that her two daughters will not be faced with these challenges with more investments in medical research and the commitment of healthcare experts.
