Russia comes up with Elton John and his foundation

The AIDS Foundation by Elton John was declared undesirable organization in Russia. The accusation: propaganda of western values and criticism of Russia’s politics.

The Russian Attorney General has declared the AIDS foundation of the British musician Elton John to be an undesirable organization. This is the same as an official ban. According to the authorities, the foundation behaves negatively towards a policy that “defends traditional spiritual and moral values”.

The establishment of the Attorney General explains that the foundation supports associations for AIDS prevention and fighting, but is more focused on the “propaganda of non -traditional sexual relationships, western family models and gender changes”.

Elton John Foundation is not welcome in Russia

The Elton John Aids Foundation has been committed to fighting HIV and AIDS for decades. She has been supporting partner organizations in Ukraine for more than 20 years and has provided over four million US dollars since the beginning of the war.

Russia’s decision makes international criticism, since the country itself is severely affected by the HIV epidemic. According to the Russian epidemiologist Wadim Pokrowski, around 1.2 million people in Russia live with HIV. In comparison, the Robert Koch Institute estimates the number of HIV-positive people in Germany at around 96,700.

HIV numbers are alarming in Russia

The UN program for HIV and AIDS recently reported a worrying development in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. While the number of new infections worldwide has decreased since 2010, they continue to rise in this region – especially in Russia. The criminalization and discrimination against endangered groups make prevention and fight against AIDS considerably difficult.
