Duchess Meghan speaks openly about her miscarriage in her podcast and reveals how she has overcome grief.
In the Duchess Meghan (43) again speaks openly about a very personal topic. In an interview with the lawyer, activist and author Reshma Saujani (49), founder of the “Girls Who Code” organization, Meghan says, among other things, about her miscarriage – and emphasizes that the title “Mama” is indispensable for her: she never wants to give it back.
Meghan and Reshma had already got to know each other in the Kensington Palace in 2018 – at that time Meghan was pregnant with her first child, Archie, pregnant and still active as a royal. In the course of the podcast conversation, which is about better working conditions for women, among other things, Meghan himself brings up the topic of miscarriage. “I only address this if you feel comfortable,” says the mother of two sensitively to her guest.
“I know that you spoke publicly about it when you made ‘Girls Who Code’, about all the personal things that happened to you at the time. Also about the miscarriages you have experienced. I also talked about the miscarriage that we experienced,” opened Meghan after around 30 minutes.
Meghan thinks about her miscarriage today
Apparently Duchess Meghan has now made her peace with the painful experience. “I think at some point you have to learn to break away from something you have put so much hope in. And realize that it is okay to let go of something that you wanted to love for a long time,” she explains in the podcast. As early as 2020, Meghan opened openly about her miscarriage in a moving article for the “New York Times”.
At the time, Meghan said: “Losing a child means enduring an almost unbearable grief.” Many would have experienced this, “only a few talk about it”. According to the Duchess of Sussex, it was discouraged, as many women suffered miscarriages, and yet the topic is a “taboo”.
Her conversation partner in the podcast gratefully takes up Meghan’s views on this topic. “I have the feeling that you read my diary. I find it very revealing because I think that many have experienced something like this in this way.” She had tried to get pregnant for so many years and had some miscarriages due to autoimmune problems, said Reshma Saujani.
Being a mother is her “favorite activity”
Later in the podcast, Meghan also reveals that she love to be a mother. “This is my favorite pastime,” says the 43-year-old, who has just founded her own company “As Ever”. Even if it is exactly that “where we all sometimes say: ‘Oh my god, I need a break’.” Instead of really relaxing, she gets to scroll through photos of her children – until Prince Harry appeals to her: “Honey, you can’t even switch off? Make a workout or something.” Meghan laughs at it, but knows how difficult it is. “I just want to cuddle with my children.” For them this is exactly the area of tension between parenting: “It is so much at once – but I would not exchange it for anything, even if it is sometimes overwhelming.”
She recently took care of her sick children Archie (5) and Lilibet (3). “One of my children has RSV, the other influenza A. (…) cough juice and back the back all night, you already know,” says Meghan. But still you can find a way to be there for both the children and the work.
She wanted to inspire the younger generations to make some changes. As to say, for example, at an work date: “Yes, today I will be there for you, but I will be there for you in my sweatshirt today because I was awake with my babies all night, but I will still be able to be there for both because both are important and fulfill me.”
Duchess Meghan’s new podcast “Confessions of a Female Founder” comprises a total of eight episodes and is her second podcast after “Archetypes”. In the episodes, Meghan not only shares her own experience as a founder, including her new lifestyle brand “As ever”, but also has “inspiring” conversations with other founders who have developed “small ideas for successful companies”. It is not yet known who will be a guest in the further episodes.
