An unusual joint date: The royal couple from Great Britain and Sweden planted a special oak in Windsor together.
King Charles III. (76) and Queen Camilla (77) met with the Swedish royal couple on a special royal appointment. Together with King Carl XVI. Gustaf (79) and Queen Silvia (81) planted an oak in the Home Park of Windsor Castle on May 1st. .
The tree planting was celebrated to celebrate Charles and Camilla’s crowning glory, which marks the second time on May 6th. The ceremony took place just a few days after the 79th birthday of the Swedish king, which he celebrated on April 30th.
Swedish oak with a historical tool
Both monarchs were used with shovels in the planting campaign. Particularly noteworthy: King Carl Gustaf used a shovel with historical importance. With exactly this tool, his predecessor, King Gustaf V, had already planted an English oak in the Windsor Great Park in November 1908.
The now planted Swedish oak (Quercus Robur) comes from the royal tree nursery on the Solliden-Palast, the private summer residence of the Swedish royal family in Borgholm. She was presented as a gift from the Swedish king.
After the men’s work, Queen Camilla and Queen Silvia took over the first irrigation of the freshly planted tree with watering can. A symbolic act that underlines the connection of the two royal houses.
Royal family tradition
At the traditional military festival for King Carl Gustaf’s birthday the day before there was also a special moment: Princess Ines, the daughter of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, born in February, had her first balcony appearance. The little girl is the ninth grandchild of the Swedish royal couple and bears the names Ines Marie Lilian Silvia – the middle names honor both her maternal grandmother Marie and her paternal grandmother, Queen Silvia.
Carl Gustaf has been King of Sweden since 1973 when he climbed the throne at the age of 27 after the death of his grandfather. His father, Prince Gustaf Adolf, died in a plane crash when Carl Gustaf was still a baby. At over half a century on the throne, he is the longest -ruling monarch in Swedish history.
Anniversaries are imminent
While King Charles commits the second anniversary of his historical crowning glory in the coming week, King Carl XVI. Gustaf celebrate another milestone later in the year – the 52nd anniversary of his ascent of throne on September 15th.
The Swedish king could thus exceed the reign of his cousin, Queen Margrethe von Denmark. In January 2024, the Danish monarch had abdicated her ascent of the throne on the 52nd anniversary and handed over the throne to her son Frederik.
