During the lockdowns of the past few months, more and more people discovered running for themselves. Large sporting goods manufacturers in particular report that some of their running shoes are sold out. Sure, when fitness studios and sports halls are closed, what is left? Fortunately, you can run almost anytime, anywhere. Even off the beaten track, as the trend sport trail running shows.
Trail running is particularly healthy
Through meadows, on narrow paths through the forest, uphill and then downhill again – the increasingly popular sport demands a lot from runners. Especially when it comes to hilly or stony terrain. Then you need surefootedness and full concentration. Every step has to be right, otherwise falls and injuries are inevitable.
The name trail running is not exactly defined. Most understand it to mean running on paths and unpaved or hardly paved paths through nature. It goes through the forest, along rivers, some even run up to peaks in the high mountains. The blogger and extreme athlete r is one of the most prominent trail runners.
Who is trail running for?
But for which leisure runners is the trend sport suitable? That’s what the new episode of our podcast “She’s running. He’s running.” My co-host Mike Kleiss and I had very different experiences on the trail. Exercise in nature is good for body and mind, especially mentally you benefit from running in the country. That is even scientifically proven. But trail running also offers some additional challenges for the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular system. For example, when you have to walk carefully on a surface with wobbly stones – or want to climb a slope.
