After a hyaluronic acid treatment, a woman develops painful swelling under her eyes and on her chin. Her doctor is investigating a suspicion: Could the recent corona vaccination play a role?
About six months previously, the woman in her mid-forties had had the tear troughs under her eyes filled and her chin reshaped with hyaluronic acid in a practice. Now, two days before she came to see me, she had noticed swelling under her eyes and on her chin: pea-sized nodules that were painful to touch. I had never seen anything like it before, although I work a lot with hyaluronic acid and other filling materials, so-called fillers, to fill and smooth wrinkles. Injections can lead to side effects and reactions. However, the redness, swelling or allergic reactions usually occur in the first few days after the treatment – and not months later. I asked the woman whether she had had any injections in another practice after the procedure. She said no. I prescribed her an anti-inflammatory painkiller and advised her to wait.
