Sports physician Sabine Bau won 23 medals in fencing at the Olympics, World and European Championships. How did she experience her meteoric career?
You are now an orthopedist and sports doctor. Do you still get excited about indoor fencing tournaments?
No. Since I ended my fencing career a long time ago and my daughter also stopped, I no longer have any real connection to fencing.
You had a meteoric career: at just 17 years old, you became vice world champion in 1986. Were you suddenly the star of the schoolyard?
That was nothing special for us in Tauberbischofsheim. In my class, there were three or four other fencers besides Anja Fichtel, Annette Klug and me. Back then, we had school every other Saturday. If there was a competition at the same time, to put it exaggeratedly, a quarter of the class was absent. We fencers were considered spoiled. It was said that we had many advantages through our sport.
Was there something to it?
