A man has back pain. A doctor discovers what the patient is suffering from – and explains why close cooperation between specialist disciplines is so important.
I had last seen the patient ten years previously. Back then, he had broken a vertebra after a fall. Now the man in his mid-seventies had come in because his back hurt. I was supposed to see what was wrong. He said that he had been “completely checked out” in a clinic the week before because of back and upper abdominal pain. X-rays, laboratory tests and a gastrointestinal endoscopy had all been unremarkable. He had been sent home without a diagnosis. During the examination, I immediately noticed his rounded back, and when I tapped him, his spine hurt. I thought it was osteoporosis. I am well versed in the diagnosis, our practice is an osteoporosis focus center (“This helps with osteoporosis”, Herbig Verlag, 2024).
