A woman complains of pressure in her ears, a nasal spray for a cold doesn’t help. The problem comes from a completely different angle.
This text comes from the stern archive and first appeared in October 2023.
At first, there was nothing unusual about the patient. She came to our ENT practice because she had been feeling pressure in her right ear for a few months. In addition, the ear had “closed” – we know the feeling from traveling in an airplane or hiking in mountains at high altitudes. It can also happen if an effusion has formed in the middle ear as a result of a cold.
We initially prescribed the patient, a woman in her forties, a decongestant nasal spray. But after a few weeks she came back to see us. Her symptoms had not improved; on the contrary: the pressure in her ear had increased significantly and when she blew her nose she heard a bubbling sound in her ear. She also had the impression that she could hear less well in that ear than before.
