Communication is fundamental to relationships and friendships. Yet we often talk past each other – or about trivial things. Sometimes it helps to ask the right questions.
This article comes from the stern archive. It first appeared in August 2022.
How are you? A question that you have probably been asked many times. And because we hear it so often, often in a professional context or when we meet someone by chance in the supermarket, it gradually loses its value. The answer is usually “Everything OK, and what?” – or something similar. And the other person replies with similar words that have the same meaning.
A conversation that is hard to beat in terms of banality. But who would complain to an acquaintance about their suffering in the supermarket? Hardly anyone. The problem is: we eventually get used to superficial small talk.
