Wout van Aert is having a year to forget. The fall in Spain means the Belgian cycling star’s season is over. And with it, his participation in the World Championships.
After the serious fall at the 79th Vuelta a España, the season is over for cycling star Wout van Aert. As his Dutch Visma team announced, the all-rounder will not compete in any more races this season. The 29-year-old will therefore also miss the World Championships in Zurich, which begin on September 22nd.
On Tuesday, the Belgian crashed on a wet descent on the 16th stage of the Tour of Spain and injured his knee. Van Aert did not break any bones, but did suffer a “serious” knee injury. “Van Aert remains in hospital in Belgium, where he is receiving intravenous antibiotics to minimize the risk of infection,” his team said.
The all-rounder, who won three stages at this year’s Vuelta, is having a season to forget. The nine-time Tour de France stage winner suffered a serious crash in the semi-classic Across Flanders in March. As a result, he missed out on the Giro d’Italia, among other things. He did not win a stage in the 111th Tour de France, finishing in second place twice.
