Our reporter is doing undercover research at the Charité. She wants to uncover abuses and slips into a role in which she feels responsible for the lives of the patients.
The man lying in front of me could die. A family man, married, one daughter. Mr. Meisner* is only 51 years old. “15 years younger than my father,” I think. “That’s not enough to die, is it?”
It is three weeks since Meisner himself walked through the entrance door of the clinic 15 floors below because of a brain abscess that was to be removed. At first he seemed to have survived the operation well. Nevertheless, he is now lying in a hospital bed on ward 115, the neurosurgery ward, barely responsive. His eyes are closed, his blood pressure is low, his pulse is too high, a damp cloth is on his head. He has a fever of almost 40 degrees, and his temperature will not go down, not for days.
