The teacher Maike Stein talks about her deafness, why her deafness also brings her advantages and how cochlear implants opened up whole new worlds for her.
recorded by Constanze Löffler
My name is Maike Stein and I have been deaf since birth. My middle sister was born hard of hearing and has become deaf over the years. Only our third sister can hear normally. When I talk to hearing people who have never interacted with deaf people, they sometimes ask why I am deaf. But I think that’s a strange question. I don’t care where she comes from. It’s like my curls – I don’t ask myself where I got them from. They are there – I accept them and am happy about them. In the same way, I accept my deafness. It also brings me advantages, such as new world views and the ability to express myself using sign language.
