Health Minister Karl Lauterbach takes a look at the situation in the Amazon in Brazil and calls for global climate protection. He also refers to health consequences.
Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has warned of the dangers of further destruction of the rainforest. “The rainforest is of great importance for world health,” said the SPD politician during a visit to the Brazilian Amazon, according to the ministry. The people in the region felt the impact of climate change.

In view of an “unbelievable drought”, medical care there is currently not as good as it could be because boats cannot reach patients. If the rainforest collapses, this would also change health worldwide, said Lauterbach, for example with a view to tropical diseases and infectious diseases transmitted by animals.
The upcoming G20 meeting of health ministers in Rio de Janeiro must therefore also focus on “how to better protect the rainforest in order to better protect global health,” demanded the minister. “I believe that the health consequences of climate change need to be given greater emphasis so that people understand that climate change directly affects them.”
