Height-adjustable desk: Is standing unhealthy in the long run?

Working a lot at a height-adjustable desk? This is apparently not as good an idea as previously thought. However, a return to the office chair is not appropriate.

Standing tables or height-adjustable desks are an essential part of an ergonomically designed office. Some people even work exclusively while standing – but should think again: “Our research has shown that standing a lot does not improve cardiovascular health in the long term and can increase the risk of circulatory problems,” says lead author Matthew Ahmadi from the faculty of Medicine and Health from the University of Sydney. Working for long periods of time, for example at a standing table, does not provide any better protection against coronary heart disease, stroke and heart failure. Instead, the risk of circulatory-related varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis increases.
