A man lost his penis because of incorrect treatment. Now he is receiving record compensation. He actually went to the doctor for a completely different reason.
Actually, the American patient just wanted testosterone treatment. The then 66-year-old turned to the NuMale Clinic in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2017 to get his hormone levels under control and lose some weight. He was then persuaded to undergo extensive treatment for alleged erectile dysfunction. The consequences now make him an extremely rich man.
After several years of litigation, the Bernalillo County court ruled in favor of the man, US media reports. He receives a record amount in compensation: $37 million in direct damages, plus $375 million in fines from the clinic, which also have to be paid out to the man. With interest, the total could ultimately exceed $550 million, according to his lawyers. That corresponds to 520 million euros.
Expensive treatment hyped up
The court justifies the record punishment with the failure of the clinic staff and the dramatic consequences for the man. Although the patient, known only as Michael, did not complain of erection problems himself, he was persuaded by the treating doctor to undergo treatment that cost over $5,000. Not only were testosterone capsules implanted in his buttocks, but he was also prescribed injections that he was supposed to inject into his genitals.
While the capsules were being implanted in the clinic, he was given the injections to take home. He had previously been explained how to set them. Because he couldn’t find any success, he turned to the clinic again. And received the next mistreatment.
Penis destroyed by permanent erection
“An assistant doctor gave the injection because he couldn’t do it himself. He injected 75 percent more of the chemical than necessary, too large a dose,” Michael’s lawyer explained to “KOB News.” “Then he told him, ‘Go home and show all your friends.’ He said that to a 66-year-old,” says the lawyer, stunned. “It” was the artificially induced erection with which Michael left the clinic. And which ultimately cost him his penis.
Because even after the weekend it didn’t go back on its own. When the patient sought help again at the clinic on Monday, it was too late. Even an emergency operation couldn’t save his body. “The penis is dead,” said his lawyer. “It is much smaller than before, a lump of scar tissue that is no longer functional in any form.”
The clinic has so far only commented cautiously on the verdict. “We respect the legal processes, but cannot comment due to the ongoing proceedings”; The local newspaper “Sacramento Bee” quotes from an email from the company. However, we continue to see ourselves as “committed to providing safe and high-quality patient care”.
