Laura likes to wear clothes. She is proud of her long, blond hair and the best in her football team. Laura is 14 years old – and gladly a girl. This is not always easy for Laura’s parents. Because on paper Laura is actually called Ben. She has a penis and was born as a boy. She grew up with the wrong gender if you ask her. Laura is trans*.
It is estimated that two to three percent of all children and adolescents in this country are like Laura – they are convinced that they were born in the wrong body. Statistically, a girl in the boy’s body is more common than a boy in the girls’ body. In adults, the number is lower. “There are no real explanations for this,” says child psychiatrist Professor Michael Schulte-Markwort in an interview with the star.
