In the United States, bird flu has been spreading for a long time – now the neighboring country Mexico reports the first death with the virus.
In Mexico, a person died of bird flu for the first time. A three-year-old in the northern state of Coahuila died after an infection with the H5N1 virus of multi-organ failure, as Coahuila’s health minister Eliud Aguirre reported on Tuesday. So far there have been no further suspected cases of H5N1 infections in Mexico, the minister emphasized.
In the USA, Mexico’s northern neighboring country, bird flu has been rampant for a long time. So far, around 70 cases of infections have been recorded in humans.
The H5N1 bird flu virus first appeared in 1996. The number of foci of infection in birds has increased exponentially since 2020 – the number of infected mammal species, including dairy cows, also increased. Almost all infected birds die from the disease.
