More than 1000 emergency shelters for refugees

Preparations have been underway in the Red Cross logistics center in Linz for days: equipment for setting up more than 1,000 emergency shelters is ready for departure. Beds, blankets and hygiene material are stored in containers, and food and technical equipment, such as power generators, have also been prepared.

700 pallets of relief goods, 2000 camp beds, 60 tents, four pallets of hygiene packages and 50 pallets of blankets can be called up at any time. “Upper Austria is prepared to take care of war refugees from Ukraine quickly in emergency quarters,” says Social Provincial Councilor Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (VP).

If necessary, the emergency shelters should be set up primarily near relevant transport hubs in the central area, the Red Cross said yesterday. “Obviously, we would like to never have to activate our warehouses and capacities, but thanks to the many volunteers we are able to help quickly at any time,” says Walter Aichinger, President of the Red Cross in Upper Austria.

Center built in Vienna

The city of Vienna also set up a first arrival center for refugees from Ukraine yesterday. The trial phase starts today, and the sports hall in Vienna’s second district is scheduled to go into 24-hour operation tomorrow. According to the Ministry of the Interior, around 1,600 Ukrainians crossed the Austrian border on Sunday. About 70 percent said they wanted to continue their journey.
